About Traceroute

A traceroute is a network diagnostic tool that maps the step-by-step path data takes from your device to a destination website or IP address.

What it does:

Traceroute tracks every router or gateway—called a hop—along the route and measures the round-trip latency in milliseconds. It does this by using Time-to-Live (TTL) values, which force each consecutive router to drop the packet and report its identity.

What it is used for:

  • Locating Failures: Pinpoints the exact hop where a connection drops or fails.
  • Troubleshooting Delays: Identifies which specific router is causing high latency or slowdowns.
  • Fixing Routing Issues: Helps network engineers spot misconfigured paths or network loops.

Ultimately, traceroute acts as a visual roadmap of internet traffic, showing exactly where network performance breaks down.
